What these finishes actually are
Both start from the same cement base as plaster, but with a harder aggregate carrying more of the surface.
- Quartz. Ground quartz aggregate blended into the cement mix. Denser and harder than plain plaster, still smooth to the touch, available in more colors because the quartz itself can be dyed or sourced in different tones.
- Pebble. Whole natural pebbles, often quartzite or river stone, exposed at the surface once the surrounding cement is lightly washed back. The most textured of the three, and the most chemically resistant.

Why pebble specifically handles Fresno's water better
The mechanism is the material, not marketing. A harder, denser surface resists the etching that hard water causes on softer plain plaster, and it bonds calcium scale differently, in a way that's less visually obvious and slower to build into a rough deposit. Pebble's texture also hides the fine mottling and staining that shows starkly on smooth white plaster. - Small kids or heavy pool use: pebble's grip underfoot is an advantage on steps and shallow ends, though the texture can feel more abrasive on sensitive skin than smooth plaster, worth a test walk on a sample if that's a concern.
Questions people actually ask
"Does pebble feel rough on your feet?" Noticeably more textured than plaster, yes. Pebble Sheen and similar finer aggregate versions exist as a middle ground, less texture than standard pebble, still more durable than plain plaster.
"Can pebble go straight over old plaster, or does it need a full chip out?" Depends on the condition of what's underneath.
