The four things that move a Fresno quote
- Square footage and shape. The baseline driver, and the reason two pools of similar size can still price apart if one has steps, a spa spillover, or tight curves that slow the crew down.
- Finish chosen. Plaster, quartz, or pebble, each with its own material cost and labor time.
- Condition of what's underneath. A simple recoat over sound plaster and a full chip-out with crack or rebar repair are priced completely differently, and this is usually the single biggest swing between two bids on the same pool.
- Whether a permit gets triggered. If the job pulls a building permit, and it should if it counts as a remodel, the state's 2-of-7 safety feature requirement and the city's drain exemption paperwork both attach, adding real cost if the property doesn't already have compliant fencing, gates, or alarms.
Licensing, and how to check it yourself
California requires a C-53 Swimming Pool Contractor license for any pool or spa job where labor and materials together exceed $500, backed by a $15,000 contractor bond. Any license number is free to verify directly at cslb.ca.gov before you sign anything.
